South Ubian Seaweed Farmers Receive WB-EU Funded Subproject
TAWI-TAWI – The seaweed farmers from Barangay Dampong and Tampakan, Municipality of South Ubian, benefited from the Fish Landing and Warehouse with Solar Dryer facilities, as the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform – Philippine Rural Development Project successfully conducted the turnover ceremony on February 13, 2024.
Leading the turnover ceremony was Deputy Project Director Ammal D. Solaiman, JD, accompanied by the representatives from the Project Support Office Mindanao, MAFAR Tawi-Tawi Provincial Office, and the key officials from the Local Government Units of South Ubian Municipality.
In her message, DPD Ammal D. Solaiman, JD, underscores the impact of the project on the community and encourages the LGU officials to enhance the strong collaborations further.
“Let’s work together to provide for the needs of our farmers, which will help uplift their livelihoods,” remarked DPD Solaiman, underlining the commitment of the Bangsamoro Government to support local farmers and fisherfolk communities.
Funded by the World Bank and European Union, the turned-over projects include a Fish Landing worth ₱5,944,146.34, benefiting farmers from Barangay Dampong, and a Warehouse with a Solar Dryer worth ₱5,954,942.62, benefiting both farmers from Barangay Tampakan and Barangay Dampong.
This improved fish landing facility provides seaweed farmers with efficient and safe handling of their produce. At the same time, the Warehouse with Solar Dryer offers a means for seaweed farmers to properly dry and store their harvest, reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring higher quality products.
PSO-Mindanao I-Plan Component Head Elden Karl L. Requilme congratulated the LGU of South Ubian and the farmers for the completion of the projects, emphasizing the importance of maximizing the benefits according to their intended purpose.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Administrator of South Ubian, Abdulajid S. Alih, expressed his gratitude on behalf of Hon. Mayor Hadzri H. Matba for the support given to the farmers and residents of South Ubian.
The turnover ceremony concluded with a symbolic ribbon-cutting, symbolizing the opening of the warehouse with a solar dryer and fish landing to the farmers and fisherfolks of Barangay Tampakan and Dampong.
