Davao City – DA’s Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP) will undergo value chain analysis (VCA) studies for additional high value crops and fishery commodities within the year.

In a recent scoping activity conducted by PRDP’s Mindanao Project Support Office (PSO), three regions will embark on VCA studies for three commodities while the other three will develop VCAs for fishery commodities.

According to PRDP Mindanao Planning Officer Milva Carinan, These commodities include the lanzones of Camiguin (Region 10), durian of Davao Occidental (Region 11), mangosteen of Sulu (ARMM) and fisheries commodities for Regions 9, 12 and 13.

“The VCA is a planning tool used by PRDP as the basis for the crafting of the Provincial or City Commodity Investment Plan (P/CCIP) to identify what types of priority interventions can be proposed to and funded by the Project,” she said.

PRDP funds a range of activities along the value chain, which includes production, processing and marketing of certain commodities identified as priority by the region, provinces or cities.

“Our aim is to fully mainstream the use of VCA and PCIP as planning tools by the local government and the entire DA system and learn best practices in its implementation,” PRDP Mindanao Planning Head Cerenio Tila.

He added that part of the support by PRDP to enterprise development subprojects and the cooperative beneficiaries is the firming up of a viable market for the commodities.

Some of the ongoing PRDP-supported enterprise projects in Mindanao include developing priority commodities such as cassava, cacao, coconut, rubber, and abaca. (Jay M.
