Pablo-affected communties to benefit from P109-M road rehab

Nabunturan, Compostela Valley – Communities affected by the typhoon Pablo in 2012 will soon benefit from the rehabilitation of P109-million farm-to-market (FMR) project.

Under the Department of Agriculture’s-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP), the 11.7 kilomenter FMR will cover the two towns of Nabunturan and Compostela.

“This FMR will link production areas to markets to increase efficiencies of rice, coconut and banana includingcorn, cacao, coffee and rubber,” said DA Secretary Proceso J. Alcala who along with Governor Arturo Uy led groundbreaking ceremony.

Alcalca said FMRs under DA-PRDP are now climate resilient as the design was improved from all weather to fully concreted roads.
Uy for his part lauded FMR as it will connect the provincial road to the remote areas of barangays Pangutusan, Basak and Magading in Nabunturan to barangays Gabi and New Alegria in Compostela.

He also commended DA under Secretary Alcala in pushing for concreting of FMRs as this will be sustained for longer years and at the same time will bring in more economic opportunities in the covered communities.

The FMR in Nabunturan and Compostela is expected to reduce travel time of transporting the produce from the farm to the market at least 50% and to also reduce the transport cost of farm products and farm inputs.

As part of building back better from the typhoon Pablo’s devastation, theroad rehabilitation also aims reduce maintenance cost of vehicles plying the road influence areas and increase traffic count by 60 percent.

Meanwhile, DA regional director Remelyn Recoter urged the project beneficiaries to be enaged in the project implenentation by being vigilant and ensuring quality standards are observed. Recoter said PRDP has instituted a grievance redress mechanisms where beneficiaries and stakeholders suggestions or complaints are being heared and promptly acted upon.
