DA-PRDP COLD STORAGE TO BOOST INCOME OF ONION FARMERS, PRODUCERS

Date Published: February 3, 2020

Palayan City, NUEVA ECIJA – The construction of the P190 million cold storage in Barangay Caballero will greatly boost the income of small onion farmers and producers upon the completion of the subproject this year.

Regional Project Coordination Office (RPCO 3) Action Officer Gil G. David together with I-BUILD Component Head Engr. Abraham Molina, Rural Infrastructure Engineer Bon Alexis Guatato, Geomapping and Governance Unit (GGU) Officer Maurice Pineda, Project Development Associate Roel Yadao and the Provincial Project Management and Implementation Unit (PPMIU) of Nueva Ecija conducted an inspection of the subproject on January 17, 2020.

“This cold storage is approximately two kilometers from the Palayan City Hall. It has a total area of 2,422 square meters solely for cold storage with initial capacity of 120,000 bags.” Engr. Guatato said in a brief interview.

Funded by the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP), the cold storage is also seen to prolong the shelf life of onion up to 4-7 months which will prevent crops from degrading early and restrain insects from infesting goods.

Three out of the 10 rooms of the cold storage are expected to be functional by March 2020 while the whole completion of the facility is slated to be operational by November of 2020.

The construction of such facility is needed considering the growing local economy of Nueva Ecija. (Ma. Reina Len Luna, RPCO3 InfoACE)
