Better road lessens hardship in MisOcc town
Tudela, Misamis Occidental — Farmers in barangay Casilak San Agustin here used to endure the slippery portions of the road going to the town proper about 10 kilometers away.
“The road was very slippery that we need to disembark from the motorcycle to avoid accident,” said the 68-year old resident Letecia Lagunay.
But recently a fully concreted 2.26 kilometer Casilak San Agustin farm-to-market road was opened to welcome farmers, students and the community for a safer and faster ride or stroll.
The rehabilitation of the road amounting to P23.5 million was jointly implemented by Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) and the local government of Tudela.
During the turnover ceremony held recently, DA Undersecretary for High Value Crops Evelyn Laviña emphasized that the road project is one project that will further help the residents in providing food for their family through better income and savings. She emphasized the present administration will continue to work for food sufficiency and betterment of lives in rural communities.
“Now that there is accessibility here, I encourage you to start forming a cooperative and prepare a plan for sustainability by enhancing (product marketability) through the value chain,” Laviña said.
Laviña assured the residents that while communities craft their plans, the LGU and DA will assist them in achieving the goal of the community.
“I am very thankful that the concrete road was established. Now the road is very accessible and travel time to the town center is much faster,” Lagunay said.
The road project directly benefits 140 households with more than 3,000 hectares of agricultural land planted to banana, corn, coconut, abaca, upland rice, cassava, root crops and vegetables.
Barangay Chairperson Merlyn Sabellena said their council has accepted the responsibility of maintaining the road and hoped that this will remain passable for more than 20 years.
Gracing the turnover ceremony were Misamis Occidental 2nd District Congressman Atty. Henry Oaminal and Tudela Municipal Mayor Samuel Parojinog.
