Some members of the Sagada Arabica Coffee Growers and Processors Organization (SACGPO) joined a three-day exchange visit earlier this month to the Curve Coffee Farm in Pangantucan, Bukidnon, and the Curve Coffee Roastery and BCAA Cupping Laboratory in Manila.
Held from November 5 to 7, 2024, the exchange visit, in collaboration with Agriterra, offered SACGPO members valuable insights and best practices to support the growth of their coffee enterprise. A technical staff from the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) Cordillera also participated.
Agriterra, a Netherlands-based non-profit founded in 1997, supports farmers’ organizations in developing countries by enhancing business operations, access to financing, and market linkages. As SACGPO’s partner, it facilitated the visit and provided technical guidance.
During the visit, the participants learned about various aspects of coffee production, from selecting and cultivating specialty varieties to fermentation and roasting techniques. The event also tackled the critical role of quality control focusing on coffee cupping and environmental monitoring.
At the BCAA Cupping Laboratory, they practiced basic cupping techniques to evaluate flavor profiles, a crucial process in maintaining consistent quality. Additionally, Curve Coffee Farm’s attention to temperature and humidity monitoring showed how environmental control during production and processing preserves bean quality and flavor.
By implementing these practices, SACGPO aims to produce a more consistent, high-quality product that can compete on both local and international levels.
Krisha Marie Mecija, Agriterra Cooperative Advisor, said that a valuable aspect of the exchange was the opportunity to see how investing in the right equipment and fostering industry connections can drive growth.
“Curve Coffee’s facility setup highlighted how proper tools can optimize productivity and maintain high standards in production, and networking with the Curve Coffee and BCAA equipped SACGPO with knowledge and connections that can serve as resources for its future development,” Mecija said.
SACGPO is the proponent of the completed DA-PRDP-funded enterprise subproject on cupping laboratory. Their business proposal for upgrading and expanding their coffee enterprise is currently being finalized, with Agriterra as their Non-profit Organization partner.
With the knowledge gained from this exchange visit, SACGPO is set to enhance the quality of its products and expand its market presence. By integrating best practices and building connections, the organization is poised to contribute to the growing reputation of Sagada coffee.
