Initial steps commenced for Hog VCA development
Date Published: May 2, 2022
The Department of Agriculture – Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) Regional Project Coordination Office-CAR (RPCO-CAR) formally started the data gathering activities for the development of the Hog Value Chain Analysis (VCA).
Held from March 22-24 and March 29-31 in Mountain Province and Benguet respectively, the RPCO-CAR conducted guided surveys, key informant interviews, and focus group discussions with hog raisers, input suppliers, traders, processors, and other industry players to gather information on their production/processing/marketing/trading practices, among others.
The respondents/interviewees come from the top three hog-producing municipalities of the provinces that are identified in coordination with the DA-CAR Livestock Program and with the provincial/municipal Livestock Coordinators.
RPCO-CAR Planning Officer Arnel Gagujas said the development of the Hog VCA was initiated upon the request of various Local Government Units (LGUs) in the Cordillera region for farmer groups to be able to propose enterprise subprojects in support to the hog industry.
The data gathered will form part of the cluster-wide (Regions 1, 2, 3 and Cordillera Administrative Region) hog VCA, which will be the basis of interventions to be included in the Provincial Commodity Investment Plan (PCIPs) of the LGUs.
Representatives from the Provincial/Municipal Agriculture Office, as well as from the Veterinary Office, also participated in the data gathering activities.
The series of interviews will continue to be conducted in top three hog-producing municipalities in Benguet and Ifugao. | Elvy T. Estacio (RPCO-CAR InfoACE Unit)
