PRDP-Bicol I-PLAN ameliorates pineapple Value Chain Analysis in Camarines Norte

Date Published: June 17, 2022

The Local and National Level Planning Component or I-PLAN of the Department of Agriculture – Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) Regional Project Coordination Office (RPCO) Bicol conducted the updating of the Value Chain Analysis (VCA) for Pineapple on May 13, 2022 to validate and finalize the existing data and gather additional inputs for the current Pineapple industry in Camarines Norte.

The RPCO-Bicol I-PLAN team conducted a series of Key Informant Interviews (KII) with various key players to formulate interventions that will address key constraints and identify investment opportunities, as well as promote collaboration between the national and local government agencies and private sectors.

Camarines Norte is known for its “Queen” pineapple, reputed to be the sweetest pineapple variety in the world. The Queen or Formosa variety comprises about 99% of the total pineapple planted in the province. Most of the farmers in this area rely on this commodity as their major source of income, devoting their time to develop and expand the production and trade of the pineapple commodity.

The DA-PRDP applies the value chain approach in promoting public-private partnerships to improve the overall competitiveness of focus value chains. It starts by understanding the factors and conditions where the value chain and its network of enterprises can achieve better performance to foster inclusive growth and reduce poverty. The VCA on the priority commodity will identify the investment opportunities that will be covered by the Provincial Commodity Investment Plan (PCIP).  (Michelle Angela G.
