The establishment of farm-to-market road (FMR) in far-flung areas sparked employment opportunities among the locals of the project recipients.

For 38 year old Roldan Taute, aside from reduction in travel time and hauling cost, the construction of FMR in Maligang, Kiamba, Sarangani Province provided them with additional income while waiting for the harvest season of his crops.

“One good thing about PRDP project is they considered us (locals) to be part of the work force during the construction of FMR. This motivated us to work harder since we have an additional income aside from farming,” said Taute.

Residents in the subproject areas were given jobs as part of the skilled and unskilled work force during the construction of FMR.

The emerging benefits continue to increase after the road has been completed because more residents began to engage in non-farming livelihood opportunities. Some of them invested on buying tricycle to become tricycle driver since there is increased in number of commuters due to well-paved road.

Local business such as sari-sari store also flourished in the area due to easy access to transportation from their community to the town where they purchased their products and store supplies.

Business woman Nida Sotto, 39 years old of Brgy. Cebuano, Tupi, South Cotabato is now busy in her sari-sari store and lechon manok house. She decided to start her business when she found out about the now completed farm-to-market road project.

“Our business is alive again because we have better road here in Brgy. Cebuano. Currently I’m earning an additional net income of around P800.00 daily from my sari-sari store and lechon manok,” said Sotto.

Other locals now have access to farming-related livelihood opportunities such as being farm laborers. Some farm owners are now expanding production areas as they recognized the ease of transportation of produced to the market.
